Norman Artists Share Unique Artistic Viewpoints in August Exhibition

Four Norman-based artists will share their unique creative viewpoints — bound together by vibrant colors and compositions — with two exhibitions opening in August at MAINSITE Contemporary Art, 122 E. Main, Norman.

Choreographies is a solo show featuring the work of Leticia Galizzi, while Three Different Views of Reality features the work of mother and daughter pair Carolyn and Jana Faseler, as well as Katie Kimberling.

The exhibits will run from Friday, August 13 through Friday, September 10 at MAINSITE. In conjunction with the 2nd Friday Norman Art Walk, opening and closing receptions will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, August 13 and Friday, September 10 in addition to daily gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday throughout the duration of the exhibition.

The exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.

Dissonance A by Leticia Galizzi

Dissonance A by Leticia Galizzi

Choreographies is a new body of work from Galizzi featuring visual choreographies between our desires (represented by the free brushstrokes) and the rules and values we internalize throughout our lives (represented by the grid planes).

Galizzi studied at Yale School of Art and received an MFA in painting from the University of Oklahoma. She has exhibited across New York, Connecticut and Brazil, teaches at Norman Firehouse Art Center and University of Oklahoma and is also on the Norman Arts Council board.

Jana Faseler

Three Different Views of Reality occupies the other half of the gallery. Carolyn and Jana are a testament to the intrinsic creative thread that ties the Faseler family together. Mother Carolyn has long used paint to express herself and her personality, her colorful abstracts formed with a variety of approaches and techniques upon the canvas. Jana’s feel-good, figurative works document the joy hidden in any manner of daily moments and interactions.

Katie Kimberling

Meanwhile, the multi-talented Kimberling — a full-time academic coach, improv performer and sketch comedy writer — developed an obsession with art in tanks to a mix of instruction at Norman Firehouse Art Center since 2014. Her animal-centric works are charged with life and color.

Collaborative, Conceptual Performance Inspired by Art Installation to Celebrate Closing of The Left Hand of Liminality

After a successful run at MAINSITE Contemporary Art that ushered in the return of in-person 2nd Friday Norman Art Walks, The Left Hand of Liminality comes to a close on Saturday, July 10, but not without one final hurrah!

Musician J Cruise Berry created Sculpture Music, an original musical work of art inspired by the collaborative installation “At What Point? A Love Song Duet” from artists Gabriel Friedman and Denise Duong. The composition will be performed twice on Saturday, July 10, starting at 6 and 8 p.m. Q&As will follow each performance. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be on hand.

The performances will take place at MAINSITE Contemporary Art, 122 E. Main, Norman.

Learn more about Sculpture Music below:

Ensemble - piano, horn, sculpture
Title - Sculpture Music
Duration - 12 minutes
Written - June 2021
Commissioned by - Gabriel Friedman & Denise Duong for Left Hand of Liminality for MAINSITE Contemporary Art with support from Norman Arts Council
Premiere - July 10, 2021

In Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass, there is this idea, this spirit of reciprocity, of giving back what has been given to us. Of being grateful. A cycle.

The old being made new.

There are patterns in music. Indefatigable. Expected and some not bargained for.

The best can comfort and surprise us in frightening and maternal ways. Performers listen, a natively empathetic act, and respond to one another and give and receive in a constant flow state in the union of performance. It is audible reciprocity in real time.

My friendship with artists, Gabriel Friedman and Denise Duong, is one not considered lightly and one I hope stands for as long as we do. The night their show opened, Gabe came to me and showed me his work, At What Point? A Love Song Duet, was not only sculpture but instrument. And we ran with it. The next day we began exploring the sonic possibilities of his giant instrument made of wood and metal. Learning the story of an artwork from the mouth of the artist is a deeply thrilling moment for another artist. At it’s heart, the work is ekphrasitic, a work of art created by inspiration from another work of art so that the new work calls to mind the original in such a way that one can see the work without having seen it.

This work is, “music from the fingers” and shot from the hip. Improvised. Extemporized. And tediously rehearsed. It’s scored for piano, horn, and incredibly large wood sculpture of a hand and metal bird. The work’s architecture behaves in offensively broad strokes of gesture and spiraling modulations. Chords rub against one another in passive major second suspensions. There are moments of flight, anxiously repetitive gestures descending downward in small model scales that call to mind a mother bird tending her little ones from the tippy top of an ancient sycamore.

But it’s as much about the audience, the inhabited space between performer and listener, as it is about the musicians and the music. Music is a communal art and we gather and drank from the same cup (figuratively, of course!) to be part of a performance. Music through headphones is not the same. As the composer of the work and one of the evening’s performers I cannot wait to share this moment with you all.

Summer 2021 Arts Education Scholarships
Applications accepted on a rolling basis as funds remain available

Scholarship Program Mission:  The Norman Arts Council Arts Education Scholarships are intended to provide Norman children with the opportunity to attend arts programming that is offered outside of schools.

Due to COVID, Arts Education Scholarships were placed on hold until funding issues were resolved, with slowed travel adversely affecting Norman Arts Council’s primary Hotel/Motel Tax funding mechanism. Thanks to them and many others for seeing our need, we are able to provide scholarships this Summer semester.

For SUMMER 2021 Programs – Currently, there is no deadline. We will evaluate applications as they are submitted, as funds are available.

Note: Please read application guidelines thoroughly to ensure timely completion of all requirements!

ELIGIBILITY: The Norman Arts Council invites students in grades K-8 who live or go to school in Norman, Oklahoma to apply for a scholarship to offset the cost of an arts education experience provided by an established arts organization or educator.

APPLICATIONS: NAC guidelines and criteria should be followed carefully.  Only Applications submitted through the on-line process will be considered for funding. Applications must be 100% completed for consideration. "I don't know" or "unsure" answers will deem an incomplete application.

  • express a strong desire to enhance their arts education experience beyond what is offered at schools

  • demonstrate a past commitment to visual or performing arts

  • $500 is the maximum award a single student will be granted

  • Applications must be 100% completed

Applicants will not be turned down for not meeting ALL of the criteria. It is encouraged, however, to try to meet as many as possible and to address the criteria directly in the proposal.

AWARDS:  Award notification will be by email. Due to limited funds, applicants may not receive the full funding requested and/or may not receive any funding at this time.  Our requests far exceed out budget each semester.

DISBURSEMENT OF FUNDS:  Upon award notification and receipt of the scholarship agreement, the Norman Arts Council will give the awarded funds directly to the organization or individual implementing the program applied for on behalf of the student. Should the program be cancelled for any reason by the organization or individual implementing, the funds will be returned to the Norman Arts Council’s scholarship program and may be applied for during the next cycle.

COMMITMENT TO PROGRAM:  Upon award notification, the student’s parent or legal guardian will receive a scholarship agreement that states they will commit to ensuring the student’s regular attendance to the program. If the student fails to attend at least 75% of the program, the student will be asked to withdraw; any remaining funds will be returned to the Norman Arts Council’s scholarship program; and the student will not be eligible in the future.

AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS:  The total amount of scholarship funds available may be awarded to one applicant or divided among multiple applicants. The Norman Arts Council reserves the right to not award any scholarships should there be a lack of qualified candidates or shortage of scholarship funds.

An Invitation by Denise Duong

An Invitation by Denise Duong

The Left Hand of Liminality features works by Oklahoma City artists Denise Duong and Gabriel Friedman, inspired by and created amidst the chaos of the past year.

Denise Duong is a Vietnamese American artist and muralist from Oklahoma City, OK. Growing up with an immigrant family in a city that cultivated individual’s imaginations helped feed the beast of curiosity. This created an intrigue of what was beyond boundaries, state lines, oceans, skies, and emotions which played and continues to play an integral part of her inspiration and creativity. The narrative works on canvas are created with acrylic paint, paper, watercolor and ink. When she’s not in her Oklahoma City studio painting, you can find her somewhere in the world drawing, water coloring, or painting on walls indoor and out. The allegory in her works are narrated through the interwoven figures and characters. Each little scene working with another. It’s the story within the story.

Gabriel Friedman is an Oklahoma City-based sculptural and large scale 3D artist, photographer, builder, teacher and father. He received his education at the San Francisco, Chicago and Boston Arts Institutes. His works and mediums are site specific, ranging from the whimsical to the absurd. He has training and extensive experience in a variety of materials and mediums including carpentry and woodworking, naturally harvested materials, metal and welding, blacksmithing, general construction and contracting etc. His works reflect his intent to create a long lasting positive impact with a focus on his immediate community. Gabriel creates each piece unique in form and function.

Other Places (2021) is a group of paintings exploring imagined, alien-like landscapes. Painted over an eight-month period during the height of the pandemic, these pictures became a daily meditation on color, form, and place. These works draw inspiration from both the natural world and science fiction and within them you will see a variety of rock-like structures, UFOs, portals, and orbs. These themes appear throughout their practice and evolve with each series as they explore new ideas.

Danny Joe Rose III holds a B.F.A in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Dallas. Their work has been included in both national and international group exhibitions. Danny has had solo exhibitions at Jen Mauldin Gallery, Artspace at Untitled, The Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts, Galleri Urbane, and others. Danny has been an art educator at Oklahoma City University, Artspace Untitled, Chandra Kusuma International School, and Art Class Dallas. Additionally, Danny has been an Artist-in-Residence at Artspace at Untitled, The Guapamacátaro Center for Art and Ecology, The Moon Mansion Dallas, Oklahoma City University, and in 2020 participated in a digital residency with Oklahoma Contemporary.
